Dragon Boat Festival Wrap Up

  • CLIENT: ISLAND FARMS

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 1 WEEK

  • BUDGET: $2,500 - $3,000

One of the most inspiring events in Victoria is the annual Dragon Boat Festival where dozens of teams from across North America compete in the Inner Harbour all in support of the fight against breast cancer. Once again, our friends at Island Farms asked us to capture the event and their participation.

We knew that the pace of this video would have to be high to match the energy and enthusiasm on the water. Using cameras stationed on land and on the water, shooting in slow motion, we were able to collect some of the intimate details that make this event special. Our crew also attended the eye dotting ceremony that opens the event, the traditional Chinese prayer ceremony, and the Carnation Toss which salutes cancer survivors.

As always, our team utilized a variety of microphones to ensure we collected the sound of the event as well as the images. Using natural sound in editing helps these videos come to life and pop off the screen. It was an honour to tell the story of the Dragon Boat Festival and we look forward to supporting the event for many years to come.

TC 10K Wrap Up

  • CLIENT: ISLAND FARMS

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 1 WEEK

  • BUDGET: $2,000 - $2,500

Island Farms s a great community partner for many events every year and asked us to help showcase their participation in local events by creating a highlight reel from the day. Every April, the TC10K takes over the streets of Victoria as nearly 10,000 runners and walkers take part in one of the oldest running events in Canada.

Our day began shortly after dawn capturing the elites and amateurs alike in their pre-race routines, but the moment of truth comes at the start line where even our veteran crew triple check that the record light is on before the gun fires. With the runners off to the races, our team jumped into the midst of the action - even using our gimbal stabilizer to run alongside many of the competitors.

Whenever we are out at a community event, using natural sound is the most powerful way to make the viewer feel like they are a part of the experience. Everything you hear in this clip was captured by our microphones - from the high school band performing on stage to the cheers from the crowd on the sidelines.

To help highlight Island Farms, we kept a special eye out for their branding, not the least of which was the post race recovery section where all the runners had a chance to grab a carton of chocolate milk as a recovery drink. Once the race winners had stormed across the line, our team made sure to capture images of runners of all shapes and sizes. No matter what, it’s hard not to feel inspired watching these people cross the finish line.

Victoria Race Series - Royal Roads

  • CLIENT: MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • LENGTH: 4 VIDEOS, VARIOUS LENGTHS

  • BUDGET: SEE BELOW

The summer stop on the MEC Victoria Race Series took us to the beautiful setting of Royal Roads University and the shores of the Esquimalt Lagoon. Unlike the first two events, weather was absolutely no concern for the runners or the video crew today.

The half marathon runners kicked things off with a jaunt around the forest trails on campus, where Alex was stationed to capture the excitement and enthusiasm at the start/finish line. After navigating the winding roads, the 10K group also made the swing down to Esquimalt Lagoon, which made for some unforgettable imagery for Mike & Owen who were working the drone camera. There aren't many events that keep us on our toes like these races do, but it's always a fun challenge to be in the right place at the right moment.

Now our focus shifts to creating an event wrap-up video, which will feature highlights from the first three races and comments from some of the runners... stay tuned!

Victoria Race Series - Thetis Lake

  • CLIENT: MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • LENGTH: 4 VIDEOS, VARIOUS LENGTHS

  • BUDGET: SEE BELOW

The second installment of the MEC Victoria Race Series was held on Easter Sunday at Thetis Lake, a fantastic circuit around one of the Capital Region's most popular lakes.

Though the skies were cloudy and wind swirling through the trees that morning, it wasn’t enough of a breeze to keep our DJI Inspire drone down. And it's a good thing - we were shooting over the water after all, and didn't want to have to place that call to the insurance company.

In order to cover all corners of the race course our team split up, with Amanda covering the start and finish of the runners’ journeys, while Mike and Alex took mid-course duties, capturing the participants as they persevered through the rolling trails.

It's always a pleasure to watch the enthusiasm at the start line, the determination at the 5km point and the jubilation at the finish! We can't wait to round out the series with Race Three at Royals Roads in June!

Victoria Race Series - Lochside Trail

  • CLIENT: MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • LENGTH: 4 VIDEOS, VARIOUS LENGTHS

  • BUDGET: $3,000-$5,000

Every year, MEC Victoria hosts five running races open to the public, each consisting of a 5 km and 10 km route. Locations vary around Greater Victoria, including trails such as Lochside, Thetis Lake, and the Galloping Goose.

We are working with MEC to create a round-up video feature on these series, as well as a teaser video prior to each event. And we're off to a great start - the first race at Lochside Trail in January was undoubtedly our wettest shoot yet but we came back with some solid material to share.

All it took was some rain coats, plastic bags and some innovative shots (namely holding tripods in the air) when we could not use our drone due to the wet conditions. But we had fun capturing the spirit and determination of these runners and look forward to a picturesque (and dryer) second event in March at Thetis Lake! We'll see you there.
