Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe

Concept Launch Video

  • CLIENT: FRESH CUP ROASTERY CAFE

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 6 WEEKs

  • BUDGET: $5,000 - $6,000

Anyone who knows our team will know it’s hard for us to pass up a good cup of coffee, so needless to say we were thrilled to get a call from Jim Townley and team at Fresh Cup Cafe who were hoping to create a new brand video for their unique cafe model.

Fresh Cup Cafe is full service coffee and snack bar located within existing grocery outlets in BC , giving shoppers access to fresh coffee roasted on site right within the store. Our task was to show all of the perks offered by the team at Fresh Cup and their coffee roasting technology, Roastaire,  to potential new grocery partners.

Beginning at their Surrey location, our team went behind the counter to see the entire roasting process from start to finish. We also spent time filming at Fresh Cups’ Saanichton location working with their roaster to brew the perfect cup on camera. After collecting interviews, we stepped into the edit suite to weave the story together. Using 3D animation, our team blended the original design files with footage of the Roastaire to show the inner workings of this impressive technology. After a couple of weeks of drooling over the sweet treats and hot drinks on our monitors, the video was complete (along with a shortened sizzle reel for social media) all  in time for the Fresh Cup board to present at a national coffee trade show with excellent results!

Power To Be

20th Anniversary Feature

  • CLIENT: POWER TO BE

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 6 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $7,000 - $8,000

When our friends at Power To Be approached us with the opportunity to document their story from concept to creation, we couldn’t be more excited to create a mini documentary about their journey to a permanent home at Prospect Lake.

Knowing that hearing from all sides of the organization was going to be essential, we interviewed everyone from founder Tim Cormode to the parents and participants that make the most of the organization’s adventure therapy programs. Then, with a little help from Power To Be’s Communications Director (and Mike’s former CHEK News colleague) Dana Hutchings, our team began assembling the narrative structure of the video.

After spending a few days at the new property hiking in the woods and paddling on the lake, we had all of the pieces to craft a story of how one organization is both connecting a community and empowering individuals.

As a thank you for their support over the years, we were also happy to broadcast their anniversary celebration live from the Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria - check it out:

Gala Fundraiser & Prospect Lake Tour

  • CLIENT: POWER TO BE

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 3 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $4,000 - $5,000

With fundraising efforts ramping up for another year, the Power To Be staff asked us to create a pair of videos to highlight a busy summer of initiatives.

One of the key events on the calendar is their Gala Fundraiser, held on a spectacular waterfront property in Central Saanich. Bringing together business leaders and philanthropists of all kinds, the gala features local chefs competing for top honours while also presenting some top-notch musical performances. And this year was no exception, with Blue Rodeo front man Jim Cuddy stepping into the spotlight.

With a live recording of “While I Was Waiting” as our music track and speeches also recorded live at the event, our crew explored all corners of the event to catch chefs at work and guests enjoying. Whenever we produce a video like this, it’s important to capture the entire atmosphere and especially the little details -
giving the viewer an intimate sense of the event.

Since there was no shortage of star power in Victoria for the fundraiser, the Power To Be staff also invited a few of their supporters to Prospect Lake for a sneak preview of what the site will soon become…

Power To Play - Vancouver

  • CLIENT: POWER TO BE

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 2 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $2,000 - $2,500

With one event already under our belts, it was time for our team to dive into another Power To Play event - this time in the beautiful setting of Vancouver's Stanley Park!

Once again, the Power To Be team was instrumental in pulling off this production, ensuring we had the chance to capture key teams in action and the ever-important course map to help our crew zip from location to location throughout the day.

With our camera stabilizing gimbal on hand, we were able to record some dynamic sprinting sequences as the teams made their way across the finish line. And of course, we had to ensure we were collecting the sounds of the moment as well - and used both on camera microphones and a standalone boom mic to capture the audio that would really make the final project come to life in editing!

In total, the event raised $310,000 in support of inclusive adventures rooted in nature, and we couldn't be more proud to support the cause!

Power To Play - Victoria

  • CLIENT: POWER TO BE

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 2 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $2,000 - $2,500

Power To Be is recognized as one of the most influential charities on the province, and when you’re fortunate enough to attend one of their events it’s not hard to see why. Each year the organization helps hundreds of kids explore the outdoors, regardless of their physical or mental abilities – and the key annual fundraiser for these programs is Power To Play.

This spring, event organizers asked our team to get involved and help capture the unforgettable energy of the day. With 35 corporate teams competing in a course that challenges even the most seasoned obstacle course races, we can’t think of a cooler way to raise money for the cause.

Our crew set out to cover the 10 kilometre course with an oh-so-necessary golf cart at our disposal. Between lugging equipment through the woods and running through fields with a gimbal in hand, our day was still only half as strenuous as those in the thick of the competition.

We did our best to collect the unique and interesting angles that would differentiate this year’s video from those of the past, and paid special attention to the sounds of the day as well – capturing audio that would be an integral part of the final edit. And arriving at the finish line to watch exhausted teams clamour out of the water and over the final wall to ring the bell made for some of the most rewarding images we’ve shot to date.

In editing we quickly pieced the best moments together for a public release just days after the event, which we’re proud to say raised  $223,000 for the great work carried out by our friends at Power To Be. Our crew will be back on the course for the Vancouver event in September, and we’re already looking forward to it!

Play On!

Quick Shift Series

  • CLIENT: PLAY ON!

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 12 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $1,000 - $1,500 each

Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is this country’s largest sports festival, with street hockey events coast-to-coast and more than 40,000 kids and adults participating each year. Roll.Focus. Executive Producer, Mike, has  been involved in the event since 2010, serving as a host at the National Championships on several occasions while also developing video content for the brand and their social media channels.

Over the past two years, the goal for the program has been to gather endorsements from players at the highest level, the National Hockey League. That led Mike to borrow an idea that was created while producing CHEK Television’s Vancouver Island sports show, Game On! – a quick rapid-fire interview with celebrity athletes.

Before long our team was rinkside at Rogers Arena in Vancouver to chat with members of the Canucks, and this year our travels extended as far as Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Ottawa while gathering interviews with some of the sport’s biggest names.

We have now interviewed more than 15 NHL stars, and the chance to hear some street hockey stories from the NHL pros really underlines how important the game of hockey is to Canadian kids, and celebrating that tradition is what Play On! is all about. We look forward to more Quick Shifts with players from across the country and around the world in years to come!

Tournament Highlights

  • CLIENT: PLAY ON!

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 2 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $1,500 - $2,000 EACH

Every year the Play On! team hosts more than a dozen events across Canada, giving thousands of kids (and kids at heart) the chance to celebrate the game of street hockey. And to help showcase the regional events to sponsors and participants, we were asked to create a highlight reel from both Calgary and Ottawa.

Because we were already in the respective cities working on other projects, the usual hurdle of travel costs wasn't a factor in creating these clips. So our team arrived on game day to capture all aspects of a Play On! event - from the little ones in the Tidbit Division to the men's and women's Elites.

It's always a blast to bring our cameras out to a great community event, and when that festival also involves our national pastime - well, that's just the cherry on top!

Harbour Air Seaplanes

Recruitment Campaign

  • CLIENT: HARBOUR AIR

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 6 weeks

  • BUDGET: $8,000 - $10,000

As one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies and one of the aviation industry’s most dynamic teams, Harbour Air has cemented itself as a cornerstone airline on the West coast. Now, with an expanded schedule and locations on the horizon, the search is on to grow their staff - and Harbour Air asked us to create a series of recruitment videos to get the message out.

With specific searches for pilots, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs) and front office staff, we developed a plan to produce three targeted videos to give candidates a better idea of what life is like in the Harbour Air family.  Over the course of three days, our crew traveled (by seaplane, naturally) to the Richmond and Vancouver Harbour terminals, interviewing everyone from 20-year veteran pilots to rookie deck hands in order to get a real sense of the job.

We had the opportunity to shoot at sunrise in a quiet Victoria harbour before pulling the cameras into the co-pilot’s seat for a first-hand perspective from the cockpit. Next we stepped behind-the-scenes and inside the beautiful Aerospace Services hangar at YVR to watch the Harbour Air team get their hands dirty and keep the aircraft fit to fly. With an interview with Harbour Air President Randy Wright to cap things off, it was into the edit suite to weave a narrative for each job on offer!

Green Roof Beehives

  • CLIENT: HARBOUR AIR

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 3 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $1,500 - $2,000

We first connected with the team at Harbour Air in 2016, when the Royal Tour brought the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Vancouver Island. We were asked to document the experience as the couple passed through the brand new Victoria Harbour Terminal.

Now, when Harbour Air set out to install a series of beehives on the green roof of the terminal, they asked if we would be able to showcase the process and the reasons behind the idea.

After planning out the process with the staff from the Capital Region Beekeepers Association, our crew ascended to the top of the terminal to watch the hives be hoisted to the roof. Then, as the team assembled the four structures on the building, we placed one of our GoPro cameras inside the honeycomb slats to capture the release from all angles

Then it was time for the be reveal, and with one fell swoop 5,000 honeybees were dropped out of their shipping tube and into the hive... and needless to say, it’s not the most comfortable environment when you have that many angry bees buzzing around you. But fortunately enough, none of our crew suffered a sting – and ironically, it was only the two beekeepers who drew the ire of the insects.

Once all was said and done we crafted two versions of the video – one for Harbour Air’s social media channels, and another with graphics to play silently within the terminal building itself. So next time you see a bee in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, remember that you likely have the team at Harbour Air to thank!

Royal Tour Recap

  • CLIENT: HARBOUR AIR

  • SERVICE: VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • SCHEDULE: 3 WEEKS

  • BUDGET: $1,500 - $2,000

With news that the Royal Tour arrive on Vancouver Island in the fall of 2016, our team was recruited to capture the event for a number of clients – including Harbour Air, who would have the opportunity to fly the couple and  their family on two occasions.

Our experience began with a quick flight across the Strait in anticipation of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge arriving at Vancouver Harbour Terminal. Despite the drizzly conditions, there were thousands of people lining the waterfront in hopes of catching a glimpse of royalty. That included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who nearly collided with one of our crew while riding a bike down to the event!

In just a matter of moments the plane touched down on the water, and the couple were whisked away to begin a busy day on the Lower Mainland – so we regrouped and prepared for our next encounter.

One week later, Harbour Air was once more in the spotlight as the Royal Tour’s final departure point on their Canadian visit. With the new Victoria Harbour Terminal as a backdrop, and again thousands looking on from the shore, our cameras had the privilege of using the roof of Harbour Air’s office building as an exclusive vantage point – which made for some unforgettable images as little Prince George and Princess Charlotte waved goodbye to the crowd.

With their flight soaring off into the October sky, our edit staff went right to work compiling all of the footage and interviews into a same-day recap, along with a more in-depth recount of the experience that will serve as an archival piece for Harbour Air for generations to come!
